Boothankad Estate was established in 1924, near
Mudigere in Chikmgalur Dist., Karnataka State. Its family members have been in the filed of agriculture for 80 years and are constantly undertaking agricultural activities to keep agriculture in the forefront. Since then, Boothankad Estate being the sole source of income several other estates namely Boothankad Plantations, Kalleshwara Estate, Beetekad Estate, Devnath Estate have been brought and developed to from Boothankad group of Estates (BGE).
Now with the help of modern agricultural equipments and machinery Boothankad Group of Estates (BGE) has been able to produce good quality coffee along with other crops such as Pepper, Amla, Annatto, Vanilla, Turmeric, Patchouli, Banana, Cardamom, Oran
ges, Pineapple, Coco, Arecanut, Coconut, Paddy etc., The progress made in the field of agriculture by this group has made news at State and National levels, drawing attention from people far and wide. Several agricultural related programmes including trainings are held on the estates of Boothankad group, Many of which have been broadcasted on Akashvani, Doordarshan and several other T.V. Channels. These estates are visited by several students, professors, Horticultural officers, foreigners, fellow agriculturist etc., and its activities are whole heartedly appreciated by them.
BGE has recently indulged in the large scale production of Organic manure for its own use on its farms and also for marketing purpose. As a reorganisation of all these activities, the Government of Karnataka has recently bestowed the “The Krishi Pandit” award to Mr.B.C.Arvind of BGE. Several private and Government Organisations have also honoured him for his achievement in this field.

Azolla, an aquatic plant extensively used in countries like China, Burma, Japan, Vietnam etc., in agriculture has recently been developed in BGE. For the first time in India BGE is manufacturing “HASIRU” a biomanure with Azolla, which has gained popularity and is being marketed throughout Karnataka State.
BGE was first in the large scale cultivation of Patchouli an aromatic plant and also to develop Patchouli nursery in Chikmagalur. It has sold around 10,00,000 P
atchouli sapling per year throughout India in plastic crates to avoid damages.
BGE has also developed and promoted the cultivation of Jatropha, a biodiesel producing plant. In Mudigere Taluk (Chikmagalur District) around 900 acres of Jatropha has been cultivated by the farmers for which Jatropha seeds have been distributed free of cost.
BGE is gradually converting into organic farms in a phased manner. In order to popularize Organic Agriculture in Chikmagalur District. The Karnataka Horticulture Department has chosen “Ashadayak Krishi Parivar” an Association in
Chikmagalur Dist., of which Mr.B.C.Aravind of BGE is the President. Under this banner the group is also conducting several trainings and educational programmes. The main objectives of the association is to promote organic agriculture certify organic products, to facilitate the members to become aware of monetary and other benefits available with the state department of Horticulture under the National Horticulture Mission for Organic agriculture. The Parivar recently conducted an organic festival “Suvarna Savayava Habba” which was a grand success in 2006. This association is affiliated “Jaivika Krishika” Society, Lalbagh, Bangalore.
